ABUJA, September 10th, 2021 - It is with great regret that we report on a tragic incident that occurred on Sunday, the 10th of September, in the north central region of Nigeria. According to local officials, a ferry, which was transporting a considerable number of individuals, encountered a distressing turn of events, resulting in the loss of at least 26 lives, with several others still unaccounted for. This unfortunate incident marks the second major accident of its kind to afflict the region within a span of three months.

Bologi Ibrahim, the esteemed spokesperson for the governor of Niger state, has provided us with some crucial details regarding this heartrending occurrence. The ill-fated boat, carrying over 100 passengers, including women and children, was traversing the Mokwa local government area of the state. These individuals, as Ibrahim has informed us, were en route to their respective farms, situated across a significant dam.

Regrettably, we must confirm that a total of 26 individuals, predominantly women and children, have tragically lost their lives in this calamity. However, it is important to note that the valiant efforts of the rescue teams have not been in vain. Over 30 individuals have been successfully rescued thus far. We commend the combined rescue operation, which involves the marine police, local divers, and the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, for their unwavering commitment to saving lives. Their collaborative efforts continue unabated, as they tirelessly work towards locating and rescuing any remaining individuals who may still be in distress.

It is with heavy hearts that we recall a similar incident that transpired in July of this year. In that unfortunate event, over 100 lives were tragically lost when an overloaded boat capsized in a remote area of Niger state. This incident stands as one of the most devastating disasters of its kind in recent memory.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those affected by this heart-wrenching tragedy. We extend our deepest condolences to them during this difficult time.
